Wellington High School football coach Travis Peeples embraces Eli Lavelle after losing the CHSAA Class 2A state football championship to The Classical Academy at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo Colo. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024.
PUEBLO — “Our town. Our team. Our time,” read one fan’s poster.
Two out of three in this case was well beyond half bad.
It wasn’t quite Wellington football’s time in the Colorado 2A football state championship game, as No. 3 Classical Academy finished an unbeaten season and took the title 42-36 behind a controversial no-fumble call in the final seconds Saturday at Dutch Clark Stadium.

The Titans (13-0) ultimately scored two plays later on Andrew Brown’s fifth touchdown pass, this one to Elijah Wright from four yards out.
“It’s upsetting. Usually the ball don’t lie, but not this time, I guess,” Gray said.
Boos cascaded from the stands, with Wellington fans distraught at the no-call and its seismic implications.
“There’s more than that one play. That one hurts because it was the visual one, the last one,” said Wellington coach Travis Peeples.
“The refs are the refs. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don’t. But we controlled our own destiny with a million other things.”
