Today is Dec. 2, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the football team won a championship in its Big 12 finale.

While ending a 14-year title drought, Texas recorded a 49-21 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 championship game. The 28-point victory at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium gave Texas a fitting sendoff to the league it helped found in 1996.

Texas left for the Southeastern Conference the following summer.

During its time in the Big 12, UT posted a 157-79 record against conference competition. Texas won Big 12 championships in 1996, 2005, 2009 and 2023.

Leading Texas to its 2023 Big 12 championship was quarterback Quinn Ewers, who threw for 452 yards and four touchdowns. Those 452 passing yards are the third-most in school history.
