UND names Isaac Fruechte interim head football coach

Dec. 1—GRAND FORKS — One day after UND announced Bubba Schweigert would be stepping down as head football coach, Isaac Fruechte has received the label of interim head coach.

Fruechte, 33, just completed his first season as offensive coordinator at UND, running an offense that averaged more than 30.0 points per game.

Fruechte came to Grand Forks from Winona State. The 6-foot-3 former Minnesota Gophers and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver also has coaching stints at Wisconsin-La Crosse, Winona State, Northern State and Northern Iowa.

On Saturday afternoon, UND said Schweigert would be stepping down in order to take a job within the school’s athletic department.

The Fighting Hawks went 5-7 in 2024, losing five straight games to finish the year after earning a Top 10 ranking through seven games. UND was 0-5 on the road, a stretch that included road losses to unranked Youngstown State and Indiana State.

Schweigert, Fruechte and UND athletic director Bill Chaves plan to hold a press conference at 1 p.m. Monday.
