Hugh Freeze won’t coach Auburn football through a bowl game this offseason. His 2024 is theoretically over. But he’ll enter the biggest week of it come Monday.
College football’s early signing period, which opens Wednesday and closes two days later, will be two days out. He and the Tigers will attempt to secure a top-five class.

If they do so, they won’t have any time to celebrate, as the first of two college transfer portal windows this offseason will be less than a week from opening.
From Dec. 9 to Dec. 28, Auburn and the rest of college football will try to secure additions for positions needing immediate upgrades. It’ll set the scene for Auburn’s offseason, as it won’t have a chance to add any more transfers the second window opens the third week of April.
Here are Freeze and Auburn’s seven biggest needs a week away from silly season.
No. 1: Starting quarterback
Payton Thorne played the final game of his college career on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. It closed the book on two seasons of mixed results at Auburn, and opened the book for Freeze for find another passer in the portal for the second time in his Auburn tenure.

That fact became all the more true Sunday, as Holden Geriner announced his intention to enter the transfer portal and reports swirled that Hank Brown was planning to do the same.
Without that trio, Auburn’s quarterback room is currently one player: Walker White, who tallied just 19 snaps as a true freshman.
If the Tigers can follow through on Deuce Knight’s commitment and sign him Wednesday, they’d have a pair of blue-chip passers between him and White. But that won’t negate that Freeze absolutely needs to find a premium quarterback in…
