FOOTBALL: Oakwood advances to semifinals with win over Iredell

Dec. 2—MCGREGOR — The Oakwood Panthers pulled off the upset of No. 7-ranked Iredell Dragons, 64-50 Friday.

Oakwood Athletic Director and Head Football Coach J.J. Johnson’s team is now 8-5 overall.

The Panthers face the No. 3-ranked Oglesby Tigers (11-2) in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7 at Waco Robinson’s Rocket Field.

The winner will face either the Klondike Cougars (9-4) or the No. 1-ranked Jayton Jaybirds (13-0) at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18 from AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the Class A, Division II state championship.

In the win over Iredell, senior Gavin Wilbanks finished with 18 carries for 135 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two receptions for 28 yards and another touchdown.

Quarterback Dayden Velasquez was 7-of-13 passing for 148 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He also had six carries for 31 yards and one touchdown.

Micah Reed had a solid game for the Panthers as he had three receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns, while also recording six carries for 66 yards and two touchdowns.

Oakwood ended the night with 398 yards of total offense.
