Ohio State linebacker Gabe Powers plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week, leaving the Buckeyes with two years of eligibility left.
“I want to thank all of Buckeye nation for the support I have received through my 3 years,” he wrote in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Sep 28, 2024; East Lansing, Michigan, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker Gabe Powers (36) reacts in the second half at Spartan Stadium on Saturday.
Powers appeared in 12 games this season, finishing with five tackles and returning an interception 29 yards for a touchdown in the Buckeyes’ opening win over Akron. He also contributed on special teams.
The departures of Steele Chambers and Tommy Eichenberg following last season left openings at the top of the depth chart at linebacker, but Powers did not see his role expand as a backup.
Five other linebackers saw more snaps this year. Powers logged only 29 snaps on defense, per Pro Football Focus. He played 21 snaps in 2023.
A native of Marysville, Powers was a four-star prospect in the class of 2022 and the No. 101 overall prospect, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
Players can begin putting their names in the NCAA transfer portal on Monday for a winter window that runs through Dec. 28.
Powers was the first Ohio State players to announce intentions to enter the portal.
The Buckeyes are expected to participate in the College Football Playoff later this month despite last Saturday’s loss to rival Michigan.
