The best players in Michigan go to Michigan.
That has been a bit of a recruiting mantra those around the Michigan football program have liked to use in recent years. As of Wednesday, the Wolverines can amend it slightly:
The top player in the country goes to Michigan.
Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 player in the state, the No. 1 quarterback in the nation and the top-rated recruit in the class of 2025 (per 247 Sports’ composite rankings), is officially a Wolverine. On Wednesday afternoon, he signed his Big Ten agreement at Belleville High School.
Underwood thanked the crowd for supporting him and his teammates and the community.
“I want to thank my family because without them, I wouldn’t be nowhere near where I am at today,” he said, before thanking his mom and dad individually.
What are the Wolverines getting?
“Potential franchise signal caller with the ideal blend of size, arm talent and athleticism,” wrote Andrew Irvins, 247 Sports’ director of scouting, of Underwood after watching him Sept. 20. “Exhibited no shortage of field command midway through senior season, which makes sense given resume: over 48 career starts and upwards of 165 touchdowns accounted for.
“Has continued to improve as a passer and has gotten much more in tune with his mechanics. However, the biggest revelation in his final prep campaign has been his ability to move the chains with his legs as he builds speed and dodges defenders as an open-field runner.”
