What is early signing day? Explaining college football’s 2025 early signing period

Wednesday marks the first day of the early signing period in college football, also unofficially known as the early signing day.

On Wednesday, high school recruits can sign their National Letter of Intent to the football program they’ll be spending the foreseeable future at. It’s become the unofficial signing day, as most top players put pen to paper on the first day of the early signing period.

There will undoubtedly be flips, as some recruits change their minds on their school of choice, and there will be other surprises, as uncommitted prospects choose their program. All in a day’s work in the modern age of college football.

What is early signing day in college football?

Early signing day isn’t an official term, as it’s an unofficial day in December where most high school recruits sign with their respective schools.

Early signing day references the first day of the early signing period, which in 2024 lasts from Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Friday, Dec. 6, as most players sign on the first day of the period, although some wait until February.

National Signing Day is on Feb. 5, 2025, and some recruits will wait until then to sign with their school, although most of them will choose the early signing period as either their minds are already made up, or they are enrolling early in the spring semester to start preparing for the 2025 season.

The NCAA instituted the early signing period in 2017, and it has taken over as the most likely time for players to sign.
