Dec. 5—New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier announced his plans to enter the transfer portal Thursday via a post on social media.
The 5-foot-10, 198-pound sophomore accounted for 3,934 yards of offense, 31 touchdowns and multiple program records in his first year as UNM’s starter. Dampier, a true dual-threat quarterback, was an indispensable part of an offense that averaged 484.3 yards per game, the fourth-best mark in the country.
He has two years of eligibility remaining.
“I appreciate the time, passion and energy (head coach Bronco Mendenhall) and all my coaches poured into me, and the lifelong brotherhood that I formed with my teammates,” Dampier posted on X. “We left it all on the field, and I will forever be grateful for this experience. Lobo nation, the love and support you have shown me on and off the field has made Albuquerque a home.
” … After much consideration and conversations with my family and those closest to me, I have decided to enter the transfer portal. I will miss you all, but (I) am excited for the next two years of my journey.”
Dampier threw for 2,768 yards this season, the fifth-most of any quarterback in program history. He added 12 passing touchdowns and interceptions in addition to 1,166 rushing yards and 19 scores; with 31 total touchdowns, Dampier tied former UNM quarterback Stoney Case for the third-most in a single season.
A Phoenix native, Dampier enrolled at UNM in January 2023 and appeared in five games as a true freshman, passing for 525 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions in his first season with the Lobos.
Dampier is UNM’s second starter planning on entering the portal next Monday. Luke Wysong’s representation confirmed to the Journal that the redshirt junior wide receiver intends to put his name in the portal after leading the Lobos with 69 receptions and 840 yards this…
