Why Jared Curtis enjoyed winning TSSAA football state championship more than Alabama visit

CHATTANOOGA — Jared Curtis lodged himself into a swarm of celebrating Nashville Christian teammates and joined the fun.

Bodies jumped up and down, a rowdy chant broke out. The TSSAA football championship gold ball was finally just a few feet away from them.

Curtis, a five-star prospect and the No. 1 quarterback in the Class of 2026, according to the 247Sports Composite, savored Nashville Christian’s 49-21 win over Columbia Academy in the Division II-A BlueCross Bowl at Finley Stadium on Thursday.

Curtis took an Alabama football visit for the Iron Bowl game against Auburn just last week. But not even that environment compared to being part of Nashville Christian’s second BlueCross Bowl title and first since 2015.

“Winning a state championship, for sure, was more fun,” Curtis said. “Until I’m in college, this is more fun. You can’t go to college without getting through high school. So, I’m just taking it season by season and I’m already ready to come back for next year.”

Curtis was part of six touchdowns — two passing and four rushing — and was named the championship game MVP against Columbia Academy (10-4). He was 8-of-16 passing for 158 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to 60 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 13 carries for Nashville Christian (12-1).

It wasn’t his best game this season statistically. That didn’t matter to Nashville Christian coach Jeff Brothers.

“Could we go out and showcase (his arm) and throw it 50 times? Sure. The game didn’t dictate that,” Brothers said. “He was committed to our goal no matter what his stat line looked like. It doesn’t have to look like a beautiful stat line to be a beautiful game, and I think he played one.”
