BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti likes to tell the story about how he walked into his office for the first time at Memorial Stadium last year only to realize half his roster was in the transfer portal.
Cignetti and his staff face a much different problem when the winter transfer window opens on Monday.
The 20-day window for players to enter the transfer portal opens just as the No. 8 Hoosiers start preparing for a first-round College Football Playoff game against Notre Dame. Cignetti brought the topic up multiple times on Sunday afternoon when spoke with reporters to preview that CFP matchup.
“We’ve got to really make the time count because we’ve got to balance the recruiting and the preparation part,” Cignetti said.

Cignetti doesn’t have quite the exhaustive list of needs as he had last year in the portal, but IU heavily relied on transfer signees with only one year of eligibility left. The Hoosiers had 25 players take more than 300 snaps this season — 14 on offense and 11 on defense — and 14 of them are out of eligibility.
In order to address those pressing needs, IU is going to have to schedule plenty of official visits while coaches need to carve out time to break down film of Notre Dame and spend time on the practice field.
“We had a plan for the month of December, which we revised slightly today because of playing Friday instead of Saturday,” Cignetti said. “Then I have a plan on paper through the end of the month, January 1st, which you have to have.”
