Dec. 8—The Isleta New Mexico Bowl is celebrating its 19th season with a handful of firsts.
TCU and Louisiana-Lafayette will meet for the first time in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 28 at University Stadium, just the second time in the event’s history that a Mountain West team won’t be featured.
TCU’s inclusion also represents the first time a current Big 12 team will appear in the ESPN Events-operated bowl, while Louisiana-Lafayette is planting the flag for the Sun Belt.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN at 12:15 p.m. MT. When available, tickets can be purchased at newmexicobowl.com.
“We are incredibly excited about this matchup and can’t wait to welcome these two teams and their fan bases to New Mexico”, New Mexico Bowl executive director Jeff Siembieda said in a release. “I think we have put together what should be a really good game. TCU, with a great fan base not only in Texas, but here in New Mexico, on a three-game winning streak and playing well, against ten-win Louisiana who earned a spot in the conference championship game with a very exciting brand of football.
“Two top-30 offenses coming to the Land Of Enchantment. We look forward to welcoming not only the Horned Frogs and Ragin’ Cajuns, but also the Big 12 and the Sun Belt to Albuquerque.”
Led by third-year head coach Sonny Dykes, TCU (8-4, 6-3) finished tied with Baylor and Texas Tech for second place in the 16-team Big 12. The Horned Frogs weathered a 3-3 start to close the season 5-1, claiming three straight wins over Oklahoma State, Arizona and Cincinnati to lock up a bowl berth.
TCU notably boasts one of the best receivers in the country in Jack Bech, a second-team All-Big 12 selection. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound LSU transfer caught a team-high 62 passes for 1,034 yards and nine touchdowns this season from quarterback Josh Hoover, the league’s…
