A Florida State football legend said he is “staying committed” to the Seminoles as they go through a rebuilding process following a lackluster 2024 campaign.
Derrick Brooks, who was a consensus All-American after a stellar four-year career with the Seminoles from 1991-1994, added he is “not wavering one bit” from supporting his alma mater during a charity event in his hometown of Pensacola on Monday.
Brooks, a Pensacola native and Booker T. Washington High School alum, was back home on Monday for a shoe giveaway. Thanks to Derrick Brooks Charities and Soles4Souls, and provided nearly 350 elementary school students with a new pair of shoes just a couple weeks before Christmas.
In between smiling students, Brooks was asked how he felt about the 2024 Florida State season that saw the Seminoles post a 2-10 (1-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) season under Mike Norvell, who’s been the head coach since 2020.
“I’m not going to sugarcoat it: it hurt to see our football program go through what we did this past fall. It was hurtful. That still doesn’t waver my confidence. It just hurt my feelings,” Brooks said. ““What people don’t realize is that as much as we hurt as alumni, fans or supporters, those young men are feeling the same thing. I’m always going to be respectful of the work those young men are putting in every week to get better. … We didn’t get the results that we wanted. But that doesn’t deter the fact that these young men are giving it their best. I’m always paying respect to the work they put in.”
Brooks was an All-American in both 1993 and 1994, and was the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 1993. He was a three-time First Team All-ACC selection, finishing his career with 274 tackles, five interceptions, 8 1/2 sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.
