Oregon football linebacker Bryce Boettcher’s dream senior season continued Monday, even after the Ducks defeated Penn State to claim their first Big Ten championship over the weekend.
Boettcher, who totaled seven tackles in that game and a tackle for loss, won the Burlsworth Trophy Monday evening, given to the nation’s most outstanding college football player that began their career as a walk-on.
Boettcher attended the ceremony in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with fellow nominees Shaun Dolac (Buffalo) and James Carpenter (Indiana).
The senior and South Eugene High grad began his career at Oregon as a baseball player before walking on to the football team in 2022 and competing as a dual-sport athlete.
Boettcher picked up his first start against Portland State last season as a junior, and now leads Oregon with 87 combined tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception as a senior on the No. 1 team in the country.
He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 13th round of the MLB Draft this year after winning a collegiate Gold Glove at centerfield for the Oregon baseball team in the spring.
