Not long after Sherrone Moore told reporters he was on the verge of hiring Michigan football’s next offensive coordinator, CBSSports.com reported that Chip Lindsey had accepted the job.
Lindsey, who has directed the offense at North Carolina the past two seasons, is set to replace Kirk Campbell.
Campbell was fired earlier this month following the end of a disappointing 7-5 regular season that was marked by Michigan’s struggles to score and move the ball through the air. The Wolverines produced just 22.2 points per game, an average that ranked 111th in the Football Bowl Subdivision. They also were saddled with the second-least productive passing attack in the Power Four.
New Troy University Head Football Coach Chip Lindsey is introduced on the Troy campus in Troy, Ala., on Friday January 11, 2019.
Lindsey will be tasked with resurrecting that depressed sector of the team and also nurturing Belleville star quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation’s No. 1 prospect who signed with Michigan last Wednesday and is set to join the team later this month.
It’s a job Lindsey should be able to handle.
A veteran play-caller with head coaching experience, Lindsey has an established track record of running prolific offenses.
This past season, the Tar Heels scored 32.3 points per game, which ranked 35th in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The year before, Lindsey supervised quarterback Drake Maye, who was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.
Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore told reporters his ideal candidate was someone who would run a balanced offense that would yield explosive plays and “develop the quarterback at a high rate.”
He also wanted someone with experience calling plays.
Lindsey checks off each of those boxes.
