Missing the inaugural 12-team playoff leaves Alabama feeling out of sorts – and evaluating its schedule.
In the wake of the College Football Playoff selection committee choosing SMU over Alabama for the final playoff bid, Crimson Tide athletics director Greg Byrne indicated the football program will consider watering down its future non-conference schedules.
Never mind that Alabama’s three losses came against conference opponents.
“With this outcome, we will need to asses how many (Power Four) non-conference games make sense in the future to put us in the best position to participate in the CFP,” Byrne wrote in a note on X.

Alabama (9-3), the first team out of the field, did not play a tough non-conference schedule. It trounced Wisconsin 42-10 on the road in its only game against a Power Four opponent. Western Kentucky became Alabama’s only FBS non-conference opponent that finished above .500.

Road losses to three SEC opponents (Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma) kept Alabama out of the playoff for just the third time in the 11-year history of the CFP. That includes eight bids under coach Nick Saban during the 10-team playoff era.
