Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin criticized the NCAA for keeping the transfer portal open between the end of the regular season and bowl games.
“It really is a dumb system,” Kiffin said Tuesday during a conference call with reporters to promote the Gator Bowl. “Think about what we’re talking about: a quarterback (Duke’s Maalik Murphy) going in the portal. The season’s not over yet and there’s a free-agency window open. Get the NFL … get ready for the AFC, NFC playoffs, postseason and players are in free agency. So it’s really a poor system but we just try to manage the best we can through it and hopefully, someday, it will get fixed.”
The 16th-ranked Rebels (9-3) play Duke (9-3) at EverBank Stadium on Jan. 2, 2025 (6:30 p.m. CT, ESPN).
Duke coach Manny Diaz said the tradeoff was moving signing day from the third week of December to last week.
“What we’re not doing right now is we’re not on the road recruiting,” he said. “We’re not on the road baby-siting our commits. So the fact we’ve already had a signing day takes one of the stressors out of December. The landscape changes and we adapt to it. That’s what football coaches are. We’re problem-solvers and we’re adjusters and we adjust.”
