From zero stars to the Big Apple: Why Cam Ward is in play to be the next NY Giants QB

NEW YORK – Cam Ward’s mentality on the football field is relative to his confidence: he takes a backseat to no one.

There is not a play the star quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes does not think he can make.

Aggressive throws. Throws with velocity. Throws off script and out of the pocket.

The desire to create ‘wow’ plays can also lead to unnecessary mistakes that should be avoided, and as NFL scouts start to judge where the 6-foot-2, 223-pounder fits their game, the New York Giants are at the forefront of that evaluation.

So that begs the question: what’s the bigger challenge – coaching aggressiveness into a quarterback who does not take chances, or coaching that out of the position for the sake of eliminating risk at this level?

“I think you’d always like to say, ‘Whoa,’ rather than ‘Giddy up,’” New York Giants pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney said last week.

What a great analogy, and Tierney’s sentiment sheds some light on where the Giants may go in the search for their next signal caller if head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are the ones making the call.

The conversation was in context of Giants reserve quarterback Drew Lock and his propensity as a gunslinger, but certainly speaks to a much larger picture that now includes this franchise not just in the present, but the future.

“If you’ve got to try and make a horse fast, I don’t know how much faster you’re gonna make him,” Tierney added. “But you can always try and tone him down when he needs to be. Everybody’s different, so you’ve got to figure out the best way to approach guys that have different personalities. But I think, as a starting point, just in general, you’d like to have that in ‘em and try to get it out of ‘em rather than the opposite.”
