Dec. 12—As hundreds of college football players enter the transfer portal, more than a handful of local high school graduates are among them.
Taran Tyo, a veteran offensive lineman from Versailles, has generated the most headlines after announcing he is leaving Ball State.
The 6-foot-4, 326-pound Tyo was a two-year starter for the Cardinals. He made the All-MAC third team this season and reportedly is on the radar of Ohio State, a team in need of linemen for next season, after entering the transfer portal.
Tyo was an All-Ohio offensive lineman in 2021 when the Tigers won the Division V state championship and signed with the Cardinals as a three-star recruit. He also wrestled and was on the track and field team at Versailles.
Five Springfield grads are also among those entering the portal: Te’Sean Smoot, Bryce Schondelmyer, Isaiah Gibson, Anthony Brown-Stephens and Larry Stephens.
Stephens caught 25 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns in four seasons at Toledo and entered the portal as a graduate transfer.
A four-star prospect in the class of 2023, Brown-Stephens caught five passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns this season at Kentucky after catching five passes for 44 yards and a touchdown last season as a true freshman.
Smoot led the Wildcats to their first state championship game as a senior in 2021 and signed with Jacksonville State as a three-star prospect. He appeared in four games in his first two seasons but none this year as the Gamecocks won the Conference USA championship under head coach Rich Rodriguez, who is reportedly set to return to West Virginia as head coach this week.
Schondelmyer, who replaced Smoot as Springfield’s starter in 2022 after three standout seasons at Arcanum, did not appear in a game for Youngstown State and has three years of eligibility remaining.
