Will Garrett Nussmeier be LSU football’s all-time leading passer?

Following a breakout season at LSU, Garrett Nussmeier made a decision to don the purple and gold once again.

The quarterback will return for his senior season, according to a post from his Instagram on Wednesday. Should his performance in 2025 stay consistent with this year, Nussmeier could etch his name into LSU history.

The Lake Charles, LA native is under 4,000 passing yards away from being LSU football’s all-time passing yards leader. Nussmeier’s current total sits at 5,459, trailing current leader Tommy Hodson, who quarterbacked the Tigers from 1986-89. He left LSU with 9,115 passing yards.

In a 13-game season, Nussmeier would need to average 281.3 passing yards per game to break the record. That average decreases to 261.2 across 14 games, should LSU make it to the SEC championship or College Football Playoff.

If the Tigers play 15 games, Nussmeier would need to average 243.8 yards per game.

The gunslinger exceeded 300 passing yards seven times in 2024 and LSU is scheduled to play Baylor in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl. Given his numbers last season, the record is attainable for Nussmeier even if the Tigers only play 13 games in 2025.
