Killingly wins Class SS state football championship

Another state championship banner is headed to the Quiet Corner.

Killingly capped a memorable unbeaten season with a thrilling 48-33 victory over Sheehan in the Class SS final Friday night at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

It is Killingly’s third state championship win in seven years.

Killingly junior running back Hayden Allard rushed for 267 yards on 36 carries and scored five touchdowns, while senior running back Everton Brown gained 125 yards on 12 carries.

Killingly built a 27-21 halftime lead. The big highlight was an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Allard.

Allard, who had all four Killingly touchdowns in the first half, scored on a 3-yard run with just 35 seconds left in the second quarter. Allard’s score was set up on a terrific pass play from Quinn Sumner to tight end Hunter Allard, who made a leaping catch at the Sheehan 3-yard line.

Top-seeded Killingly (13-0) extended its lead to 34-21 on the opening drive of the second half when Brown raced 40 yards for a touchdown.

No. 3 Sheehan (10-3) answered on a short TD run from senior Jack Grant and a 2-yards TD run from Josh Durant that made it 34-33 with 1:47 left in the third quarter.

But this was Killingly’s year.

Allard scored his fifth touchdown on a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter. And then Killingly drove 94 yards after recovering a Sheehan fumble and Sumner capped the championship drive with a 1-yard sneak.
