Miami (Ohio) WR Reggie Virgil, in breakout season, commits to Texas Tech football team

Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire said recently taking a wide receiver from the NCAA transfer portal wasn’t part of his strategy this month “unless something crazy happens.”

That doesn’t mean the Tech staff won’t change course if an opportunity presents itself. Miami of Ohio wide receiver Reggie Virgil on Friday night told On3Sports he had committed to the Red Raiders. His addition also was announced by The Matador Club, the collective that supports Tech athletes. He’s in Lubbock on his official visit.

Virgil, listed by Miami as 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, caught 41 passes for 816 yards and nine touchdowns this season. He’s ranked among the top 50 players and the top 15 receivers available in the transfer portal by ESPN. The Red Hawks (8-5) play Colorado State on Dec. 28 in the Arizona Bowl.

The transfer portal opened Monday and Virgil was flooded with 14 scholarship offers, according to On3. Among those courting him were Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, West Virginia and Arkansas. He broke out this season as a junior after catching only one pass each for Miami of Ohio in 2022 and 2023.

Virgil graduated from Mount Dora (Fla.) Christian Academy, the same high school as former Tech linebacker Jesiah Pierre.

Tech is expected to return its second- and third-leading receivers next season: Caleb Douglas (55 receptions, 762 yards, 6 touchdowns) and Coy Eakin (45-605-6). Josh Kelly (89-1,023-5) exhausts his eligibility when the season ends.

Since McGuire said he didn’t expect to add a wide receiver via transfer, four Red Raiders wideouts have had their names entered into the portal. They are Jordan Brown…
