Wimberley falls to La Vega in UIL Texas high school football state semifinals

Wimberley quarterback Cody Stoever put his all onto the field on Friday night in an attempt to will his team into the UIL Texas high school football state finals. It just wasn’t enough.

La Vega racked up 471 total yards of offense, decimating Wimberley 62-35 and advancing to the state finals. This is the second year in a row that Wimberley has lost in the state semifinals, falling to Bellville 35-33 last season.

After losing starting running back Josh Belanger to injury on Thursday, Stoever took Wimberley’s offense and put it on his back. The quarterback rushed the ball 29 times for 175 yards and three touchdowns and completed 7 of 14 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. In total, Stoever accounted for 292 of Wimberley’s 309 yards of offense and four of its five scores. It was a lot for one high schooler to handle, but it was also the only way the Texans stood a fighting chance.

Wimberley’s problem wasn’t the offense, but rather the other sides of the ball. La Vega’s first offensive possession ended with a 51-yard touchdown from quarterback Kourtney Parr to wide receiver Jabarie Thorton, an ominous omen for Wimberly’s future.

The Pirates scored on every offensive possession of the game besides their game-ending drive The Texans’ defense was completely outmatched, giving up explosive plays down the field and failing put any pressure on Parr in the pocket. Wimberley also muffed a punt in the first quarter and gave up an onside kick at the start…
