LSU football added to its quarterback room on Sunday, securing a commitment from Mississippi State transfer Michael Van Buren.
Despite LSU starter Garrett Nussmeier announcing his return, LSU was in the market for a quarterback with several years of eligibility left after backup QB Ricky Collins hit the transfer portal and five-star QB Bryce Underwood flipped to Michigan, leaving LSU without a high school signee in its 2025 class.
With Van Buren, LSU is getting a QB with SEC experience and three years of eligibility.
Van Buren was a four-star recruit in the class of 2024 and saw immediate action as a true freshman with Mississippi State. He threw for 1,885 yards and totaled 16 touchdowns with the Bulldogs in 2024. One of Van Buren’s best games came on the road vs Georgia, where he threw for 306 yards and three touchdowns.
For a freshman, Van Buren was advanced when working the middle of the field. He completed 14 passes for 20+ yards, too.
If LSU’s QB room stays intact, it will enter 2025 with Nussmeier, Van Buren, AJ Swann, and Colin Hurley.
Van Buren played his high school football at St. Frances Academy. The same high school that produced LSU women’s basketball legend Angel Reese.
LSU has been busy in the transfer portal, with Van Buren marking LSU’s fifth addition.
