Texas high school football semifinals: Vandegrift tops Summer Creek in 6A Division II win

WACO — Vandegrift is one win away from a state title.

Overcoming an early 14-0 deficit and making clutch play after clutch play, the Vipers became the second Austin-area team to send shockwaves through the Texas high school football landscape on Saturday when they defeated Houston Summer Creek 34-31 in a Class 6A Division II state semifinal at McLane Stadium.

Miles Teodecki threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns, Brendan Fournier ran for 84 yards and two scores, Gavin Koester returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Jack Rudberg hauled in nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown to lead Vandegrift.

The Vipers will play Southlake Carroll in the state championship game next Saturday at 3 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Vandegrift quarterback Miles Teodecki, shown in action during last week’s state quarterfinal win over San Antonio Harlan, led the Vipers past Houston Summer Creek 34-31 in Saturday’s Class 6A Division II state semifinals. Vandegrift will play for a state title next Saturday.

Early in the fourth quarter, Teodecki hit Rudberg for a 57-yard touchdown pass down the seam that proved to be the game’s winning score.

Trailing 24-21, they opened the third quarter with an 87-yard scoring drive, with a 66-yard pass to Koester being the key play that eventually set up Fournier’s 2-yard TD run.
