Jacoby Brissett was benched after the Patriots went 1-4 in his five games as a starter this season, but he doesn’t think that’s a reflection on the quality of his play.
Brissett told Mike Reiss of ESPN that there was a lot going wrong beyond himself before he was benched in favor of rookie Drake Maye.
“There’s so much I could say, but I guess, ‘not ideal.’ Obviously, a unique situation here,” Brissett said. “I’m not the one to make excuses, but at some point somebody is going to have to watch the film and understand what I was dealing with. I think that kind of speaks for itself. I think it’s very easy for people to blame the quarterback for things — that’s what this profession is — but yeah man, tough year.”
Brissett didn’t get more specific than that, but it’s not hard to figure out that he was talking about the Patriots’ offensive line, which struggled to protect him, and which never had a different group of five starters in each of his five games.
Brissett doesn’t know if he’ll be back in New England next year.
“I’m interested to see what my future holds. Hopefully, I get somewhere to land,” Brissett said.
And hopefully with a better offensive line.
