This year’s Minnesota Mr. Football selection is a historic pick.
Cam Hungerholt won the award as a nine-man player, becoming the first to win the award from that level.
For anyone not familiar with nine-man football, it is played at the high school level in some states, usually as an alternative for schools that are too small to field 11-man teams. It is very similar to regular football, with a few rule tweaks to accommodate having just nine players on each side of the ball. Similarly, some states have an 8-man football option.

Obviously, it is unusual for an athlete at one of Minnesota’s smallest schools to win Mr. Football, but that is the case for Hungerholt, a Leroy-Ostrander senior. Hungerholt set a new state record for all-purpose yards with 5,267. That included 2,846 rushing yards and 2,421 passing yards. He had 70 total touchdowns. Overall, he had 11,984 all-purpose yards amd 147 touchdowns in his career. He also played defense in his senior season, finishing with 94 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and four interceptions.
He was a four-year starter and will continue his career at Minnesota State-Mankato University.
