Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula announces he’s transferring

Beau Pribula, who has served as Penn State’s backup quarterback the last two seasons, announced Sunday night that he has placed his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

Pribula, a redshirt sophomore from Central York, said that he is leaving the Nittany Lions before their first-round College Football Playoff game against SMU Saturday at noon at Beaver Stadium.

“The current NCAA postseason model creates a challenge for student-athletes,” Pribula wrote. “The overlapping CFP and transfer portal timeline has forced me into an impossible decision.

“After speaking at length with my family and coaches, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my intentions to enter the transfer portal and depart from the team to explore opportunities elsewhere.”

Pribula’s decision to transfer is a sign that Penn State starter Drew Allar will return to the Lions for the 2025 season.

The 6-2, 206-pound Pribula had an increased role in the Penn State offense this season with new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

He completed 26-of-35 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns with one interception and rushed 38 times for 242 yards and four touchdowns. When Allar sustained a knee injury in the first half at Wisconsin in October, Pribula helped lead Penn State to a 28-13 comeback win.

Last season, Pribula was 11-for-21 passing for 149 yards and four touchdowns and carried 56 times for 329 yards and six scores.

“Growing up in Pennsylvania, it has always been a dream of mine to play football for Penn State,” Pribula wrote. “Wearing the blue and white these past three years has brought me some of the greatest moments of my life.”

Without Pribula, freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer becomes the No. 2 quarterback behind Allar. Grunkemeyer, a four-star recruit, has yet to see game action.
