Shea Ruddy knew when he got to college he would be moved from quarterback to receiver.
What he didn’t know was the impact he would make on the Hillsdale College football team.
“He is hands down the most dynamic player in the G-MAC,” said Hillsdale College head coach Nate Schreffler. “He’s a home run threat every time he touches the ball. Opposing teams have to account for him which opens up opportunities for our other skill players.”
Since the Chargers season ended, Ruddy has been recognized as the Hillsdale College Most Valuable Player – an award voted on by his teammates – and last week was named Special Teams Player of the Year and first team All-Conference in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
The super sophomore finished in the top five in all of Division 2 college football in all-purpose yards.
Whiteford graduate Shea Ruddy has been recognized as the Most Valuable Player for the Hillsdale College football team and the Special Teams Player of the Year and first-team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
“It’s crazy seeing the recognition and support from other people,” Ruddy said.
Ruddy set a G-MAC single-season record by averaging 33.3 yards per kickoff return. He was the only player in the conference with more than one kickoff return touchdown, one of which went for 95 yards and the other covering 92 yards. His 732 kickoff return yards led the conference and was second nationally among Division II football teams.
By the end of the season, most teams were kicking away from him. When teams did, they usually paid for it.
“We all were surprised,” he said about opponents kicking off to him. “In our last game, the first kick came right to me. We don’t know why teams are doing this, but we’ll take it.”
