Penn State notes: Abdul Carter, Tyler Warren named to FWAA All-America 1st team

Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter and tight end Tyler Warren were named Tuesday to the Football Writers Association of America All-America first team.

Carter, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, has been selected to three other All-America first teams: The Associated Press, Walter Camp and American Football Coaches Association.

Warren’s selection to the FWAA first team is his first after being named to the All-America second teams by the AP, Walter Camp and AFCA.

Carter has 10 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss to lead the Nittany Lions (11-2), who meet SMU (11-2) in the first round of the College Football Playoff Saturday at noon (TV-TNT) at Beaver Stadium.

“I’ve been playing since I was 8 years old, and I’m just living my dreams,” Carter said Tuesday. “I’m very blessed. I’m very humbled to have this opportunity.”

Warren leads Penn State with 88 catches for 1,062 yards and six touchdowns. He also has rushed 23 times for 191 yards and four TDs and has thrown a TD pass.

He won the John Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end and finished seventh in voting for the Heisman Trophy.

“It’s really cool for me to be on that list,” Warren said Monday about the Heisman voting. “Growing up you see the Heisman every year, so being on that list is really cool. It means a lot to me to be on that list with a lot of great players. It’s an honor. I don’t take it lightly. I appreciate the recognition.”
