MADISON – Antarron Turner has a nose for the ball.
The Ocala, Florida, native racked up 104 tackles as a high school senior. When he earned the chance to be a regular on the Western Carolina defense this season, he tied for the team lead with 61 tackles.
His next challenge will be to carve out a role for himself in the Wisconsin defense.
The 6-foot-2, 230-pound inside linebacker announced his commitment to the Badgers on Wednesday evening. His the announcement came as UW fans were digesting the loss of freshman outside linebacker Anelu Lafaele, who was rated as a four-star prospect by 247sports coming out of high school, who will enter the portal.
LaFaele (6-2-2,237) was a four-star prospect UW signed out of Hawaii. He didn’t appear in any games this season.
LaFaele reposted the 247 sports report of news on his X and Instagram accounts. He is the second member of the Badgers true freshmen class to transfer. Defensive lineman Hank Weber announced his departure Dec. 5 and has already signed with Samford.
Turner wasn’t rated as a prospect coming out of high school but quickly proved his worth at Western Carolina, a FCS program that plays in the Southern Conference.
He played 11 games as a redshirt freshman, primarily on special teams.
He started at inside linebacker this season and made the most of the opportunity. He led the team in tackles three times, including a season high nine stops versus Mercer on Oct. 26 and two-sack showing against Campbell on Sept. 7.
Turner joins an corps of inside linebacker that include sophomores Christian Alliegro and Tackett Curtis, who were part of the four-man rotation the Badgers used at the position.
The other two players, Jaheim Thomas and Jake Chaney, completed their eligibility. Redshirt freshman Tyler Jansey, who had one tackle, was the only other inside linebacker on the roster…
