BATON ROUGE — Garrett Nussmeier and Whit Weeks have been eating good lately.
One night, Weeks is ordering Fish Acadia from Ruffino’s, the next night Nussmeier is getting the steak at Stab’s.
LSU football’s starting quarterback and linebacker have both been heavily involved in the visits the transfer portal players the coaching staff and team have been targeting since the transfer portal window opened back on Dec. 9.
“I don’t know how many fancy dinners I’ve been to in the past couple of weeks,” Weeks said Friday after LSU wrapped up practice for the day. “I’ve been to a lot. Any time we have a transfer visit, I’m going to dinner with them.”

Nussmeier and Weeks are already taking up a vested interest in next season’s team talk of winning championships. That’s been tossed around by LSU coach Brian Kelly, as well as Nussmeier since the Tigers put a pin on a disappointing 8-4 regular season.
For the duo, who are the leaders on their respective side of the ball, each want to have a hand in the caliber of team LSU has next season.
“It’s getting to know the type of person that they are,” Nussmeier said of helping host transfer players. “Not only are we trying to build the best football team, we’re trying to build this locker room and culture correctly. It’s making sure they fit.
“Making sure they want to be here, that they’re not just coming here for a price tag. It’s a different world, it’s interesting the way things have changed in college football. We’ve gotten along with all the guys that have ended up coming here.”
