Where Brian Kelly says LSU football still has work to do in transfer portal

BATON ROUGE — There’s one week remaining in the current transfer portal window.

LSU football has already done plenty of damage, attacking many of its immediate needs for next season’s team as it added 10 transfer players through the first 12 days of the portal window.

Before the transfer portal window opened, LSU coach Brian Kelly estimated the Tigers would sign around 12 transfers, citing a more “aggressive” approach within the program and his staff would have this window versus what it has done in the past.

“We’ve probably gotten here quicker, earlier. I thought it was going to be a little bit longer,” Kelly told reporters after the team’s practice Saturday morning. “It still might. There are some teams that are still playing that guys have yet to make decisions. This could go a little bit longer.

“With the change in the roster (with the additions) that we’re going to be able to put together an SEC Championship roster.”

So far, LSU has landed wide receivers Nic Anderson, Barion Brown and Destyn Hill, edge rushers Jack Pyburn and Jimari Butler, defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell, defensive backs Mansoor Delane and Ja’Keem Jackson, quarterback Michael Van Buren, tight end Bauer Sharp and punter Grant Chadwick.

But LSU isn’t done, Kelly said. His initial estimate of number of transfer the team would sign was a little low.

“It’s probably going to be closer to the 15 number before it’s all said and done. We had a clear plan of where we wanted to be,” Kelly said.

So what’s left for the LSU staff to do? There’s a couple of positions at the top of the Tigers’ priority list.
