ESPN commentator Kirk Herbstreit defended Ryan Day during Ohio State’s College Football Playoff game on Saturday, calling out fans and pundits who have called for Day to be fired.
Herbstreit, amid the Buckeyes’ dominant 42-17 win over Tennessee in the first round of the playoffs, went so far as to call out Ohio State’s “lunatic fringe” regarding the subject.

“I can’t speak on behalf of the lunatic fringe, I’m not sure how they operate,” Herbstreit said of Ohio State fans on the broadcast. “The lunatic fringe at Ohio State is as powerful as anywhere in the country. … I’m sure they’ll be happy tonight, be fired up about what the Ohio State team did, but god forbid they lose to Oregon, they want to fire him again.”
In defense of Ryan Day, Kirk Herbstreit took aim at:

Herbstreit then threw a shot at ESPN’s “First Take,” a talk show starring popular commentator Stephen A. Smith, regarding the narrative surrounding Day.
“’First Take’ tried to fire him, they thought he was done,” Herbstreit said. “So, I’ll be excited to see what they talk about on Monday after this performance. They had him out, trying to find replacements. But here he is. Still got his hat on, still coaching.”
Day’s coaching tenure has largely been focused on his recent record in big games and against archrival Michigan — the Buckeyes have lost four consecutive games against the Wolverines, including this season, despite the Wolverines having a down season…
