Ryan Day, assistants add to playoff bonus total with Ohio State’s win over Tennessee

The bonus pay owed to Ohio State coach Ryan Day and 10 countable assistants more than doubled following the Buckeyes’ 42-17 rout of Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday night, according to contract information reviewed by The Dispatch.

Day and his assistants add $1.29 million in combined bonuses for reaching the quarterfinal round, which brings a rematch with top-seeded Oregon in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

They are now eligible to receive just over $2.5 million in bonuses from the playoff and can earn a maximum of nearly $5 million for advancing further in the 12-team bracket to win the national championship.

For the quarterfinal appearance, Day picks up $250,000, while five assistants get even larger bonuses, which are worth amounts equal to 20% of their base salaries.

Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly are due bonuses of $440,000 and $400,000, respectively, and Brian Hartline, the co-offensive coordinator who also coaches the wide receivers, is owed $320,000.

Defensive line coach Larry Johnson and secondary coach Tim Walton are also each at $280,000.

The postseason incentives are on top of the $11.43 million in guaranteed compensation reserved for the assistants this year, making up the largest assistant coach salary pool in the Football Bowl Subdivision, according to USA TODAY Sports’ annual survey released this month.
