The South Dakota football team will have to wait at least one more year to reach its ultimate goal.
The Coyotes saw their season come to an end Saturday with a 31-17 loss to top-ranked Montana State in the FCS semifinals.
It always appeared to be a tall task, taking on the undefeated Bobcats for a trip to the national title game, but South Dakota held its own in the first half. Montana State scored on the opening drive, but the Coyotes answered with a touchdown of their own.
USD was down at the halftime break, but only by 10 points, 24-14.
The offense went cold in the second half, however, and the team was only able to muster three points over the final 30 minutes of action.
USD quarterback Aidan Bouman finished by completing 20-of-29 passes for 236 yards. Travis Theis was the star on the ground, posting 110 yards and a score. Charles Pierre Jr. also found the end zone on the ground while pitching in 57 yards rushing.
Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott was simply too difficult to contain. He tossed for 134 yards and a score while also adding another 125 yards and two more touchdowns on the ground.
The Coyotes end their season with an 11-3 record and made it to the FCS semifinals for the first time in program history.
