ARLINGTON ― Celina quarterback Bowe Bentley can say he is now in rare company.
Bentley threw for 265 yards and five touchdowns and was the catalyst in Celina’s 55-21 win over Kilgore at the Class 4A DI championship at AT&T Stadium on Friday. It makes him one of only three Class 4A signal callers in University Interscholastic League history to throw five touchdowns in a state championship game.
Carthage’s Anthony Morgan matched that feat in 2010, and the only player to surpass him was Dayton’s Cody Green in 2008 against Sulphur Springs with six.
The four-star junior’s performance in the championship was nothing new, as he came into the game with 171 completions for 3,211 yards and 47 touchdowns in his first year starting for the Bobcats.
“He’s a great player,” Kilgore coach Clint Fuller said. “I mean, I’m a defensive guy and I think I’m pretty good at what I do, but crap you gotta tip your hat to the kid. He’s got it all. He scares you running the ball, can sit there and make plays with his feet, make throws from the pocket and he can scramble out of the pocket and throw it.”
On top of his five-touchdown performance, Bentley was the team’s second-leading rusher with 12 carries for 68 yards, adding to his season total of 124 rushes for 923 yards and 16 touchdowns.
“I spent a lot of sleepless hours this week worried about the (quarterback run game),” Fuller said. “They don’t just run him, it’s going to be in a critical situation on a third down or fourth and short.”
Bentley completed nine of 13 passes, and more than half of them went for touchdowns of over 20 yards, to finish at 18.9 yards per attempt. The efficient and explosive performance earned him the offensive MVP award, and he knew where he stood in the record book thanks to the massive AT&T Stadium video board.
