Can’t Wait For Saturday | QB change works out better for Bulldogs over the long haul

Dec. 24—***

Turns out, college football programs can tell the truth … when there is no other choice. Or the truth is already out there.

Take Georgia for example. On Monday, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck had surgery on his injured elbow. The school announced he is out for the remainder of the season.

The news means redshirt sophomore Gunnar Stockton, who relieved Beck in the SEC title game, will start against Notre Dame in the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl.

Stockton was fine against the Longhorns completing a bunch of passes for short yardage. He did throw an interception.

But my guess is he will be better against the Irish. Two weeks to prepare and knowing the ball will be his from the start will help. So will giving the Georgia braintrust time to develop plays that suit Stockton best.

Like any quarterback on that team, he has the talent. The only things missing are confidence and experience, which go together.

Stockton can run and Georgia coach Kirby Smart is downplaying that part. So, count on seeing the new guy run about 10 to 15 times, probably for big yards.

Notre Dame is banged up and its defense won’t be as good against Georgia as it was against Indiana.

The rest of the Georgia team will do what it can to keep the heat off Stockton, blocking a little better, running a little harder, jumping a little higher.

I had been learning toward picking the Irish, but am likely going the other way now that Georgia has made the QB move official.
