The first round of the College Football Playoffs produced no surprises late last week, as Texas, Ohio State, Penn State and Notre Dame all defeated lower seeds to advance to the quarterfinals, which will take place on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1, 2025.
Texas, the fifth seed, put away Clemson, the Atlantic Coast Conference champion, 38-24, before a crowd of 101,140 at DK Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin Saturday afternoon.
Texas averaged 6.1 yards per carry rushing, with Jaydon Blue logging 146 yards in 14 carries and scoring two touchdowns.
Gunner Helm caught six passes for 77 yards and added a touchdown.
The Longhorns will face No. 4 Arizona State in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. That game will get under way at noon on the first day of the new year.
Ohio State, the No. 8 seed, took No. 9 Tennessee to the woodshed in winning, 42-17, in Columbus, Ohio Saturday afternoon.
The Buckeyes will tangle with No. 1-seed Oregon at 4 p.m., New Year’s Day in the Rose Bowl, which will be played in Pasadena, California.
In a game that was played in State College, Pennsylvania Saturday, No. 6-seed Penn State hammered SMU, the No. 11 seed, 38-10.
Penn State scored the first 28 points in the game, while making the most of three SMU turnovers.
Penn State will play Boise State, the No. 3 seed, at 6:30 p.m., New Year’s Day in the Fiesta Bowl (Tempe, Arizona).
Notre Dame, the seven seed, dispatched Indiana, who was seeded 10th, 27-17, in South Bend, Indiana. The Fighting Irish led 20-3 at the start of the fourth period.
Next up for Notre Dame is a trip to New Orleans. The Fighting Irish will line up against No. 2 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, which will get under way at 7:45 p.m. New Year’s Day.
All of the quarterfinal games will be broadcast on ESPN.
