Joe Woodley helped transform Grand View into one of the premier NAIA football programs. Woodley helped create the program with his father Mike, working as an assistant before taking over the reins and leading the team to a national championship.
Eventually, there was nothing else left for him to accomplish at the Des Moines school. Now he’ll tackle a new challenge.
Woodley will try to replicate the success he had at Grand View at Drake. He was hired Monday as the Bulldogs’ new football coach. Woodley replaces Todd Stepsis, who took over the head coaching job at Northern Iowa this month.
Grand View’s Joe Woodley has yet to lose a regular season game during his tenure as the team’s head coach.
Woodley’s hiring came just two days after he guided Grand View to a perfect 14-0 season and the school’s second NAIA national championship. The first came in 2013 when Woodley was working on the staff for his father.
Joe Woodley was named Grand View’s head coach prior to the 2019 season. During his six seasons at the helms, Woodley compiled a 72-5 mark and never lost a regular-season game. He was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year five times (2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024).
Woodley, a native of Clive, was a star player as well. He was a First-Team Elite All-State linebacker in high school while at West Des Moines Valley. He went on to play at Iowa State, where he was a captain and played in three bowl games.
Woodley spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as a defensive line and linebackers coach at Johnston High School, working under his brother Brian, the head coach of the Dragons. Joe Woodley also spent two seasons at St. Ambrose coaching defensive backs and linebackers.
