The Kansas State Wildcats (8-4) face the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-5) in the 35th annual Rate Bowl at Chase Field in Phoenix, airing Thursday on ESPN at 3:30 p.m.
Kansas State is favored -7 over Rutgers.
This is the college football bowl season’s only matchup between Big 12 and Big Ten conference teams.

Kansas State, Rutgers football histories
Head to Head: It’s the second-ever meeting between Kansas State and Rutgers. The last time they faced off was in the 2006 Texas Bowl, in which Rutgers won, 37-10.
Bowl record: Kansas State is playing its fifth bowl game in six seasons, and a record fifth appearance in the rebranded Rate Bowl (formerly Guaranteed Rate Bowl), in which they are 3-1. The Wildcats are 11-14 all-time in bowl games and will be in their first Rate Bowl contest since their 35-17 win over UCLA in 2017.
The Scarlet Knights have their second consecutive bowl invitation, 13th in school history, and have a 7-5 record in the postseason. This is their second Rate Bowl appearance, almost 20 years after a 45-40 loss to Arizona State in 2005.
Rate Bowl coaching matchup
Kansas State’s Chris Klieman and Rutgers’s Greg Schiano haven’t faced each other as head coaches before.
The Wildcats’ sixth-year coach Klieman is leading them to a fourth straight bowl game. Klieman is 2-2 in bowl games and has a 119–41 career record. Klieman’s helped make Kansas State one of just eight FBS schools to win at least eight games in each of the past four seasons. The Wildcats won the Pop-Tarts Bowl last season over North Carolina State, 28-19.
