Stoops, UK plugging through portal

It didn’t take long for Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops to start rebuilding his roster.

Following a disappointing 4-8 finish in 2024, UK’s coaching staff quickly began to see players departing the program in the NCAA transfer portal. More than 20 players have entered the portal or opted to leave for the NFL. However, less than a month after the conclusion of the regular season, the Wildcats are already looking to the future.

With the addition of four-star edge rusher Kameron Olds on Monday, UK now sports 14 transfers for 2025 — moving the Cats into fifth place on the 247Sports transfer rankings.

Olds, a 6-foot-4, 245-pounder from Kent State, becomes the fifth defensive addition through the portal, joining three-star edge rusher Sam Greene (Southern California), linebacker Landyn Watson (Marshall), defensive lineman Jaden Williams (Wyoming) and cornerback Kevis Thomas (Maryland).

Stoops and his staff have already paid close attention to improving their offensive line, with the addition of four offensive linemen — headlined by 6-7, 305-pound tackle Alex Wollschlaeger from Bowling Green. Other newcomers who will be eligible immediately include three-star transfers Evan Wibberley (Western Kentucky), Wallace Unamba (New Mexico) and Joshua Braun (Arkansas).

Stoops is no stranger to the portal, having brought at least 10 transfers to UK in each of the past three offseasons.

“We’ve done good things in the past, and we know how to do it,” Stoops said earlier this month. “I feel like we have a good plan to move forward here. There will be a lot of moving pieces in the next two, three, four weeks, and we will get it fixed.”

The Cats have also brought in 6-4, 200-pound quarterback Zach Calzada, who previously had stops at Texas A&M and Auburn but joins UK after throwing for 3,744 yards and 35 touchdowns this past…
