Jayden Denegal gave his parents an early Christmas present this year.
The Apple Valley High School graduate, needing a change of scenery, entered the transfer portal and soon knew where he would be heading — back home to California, about a three-hour drive down Interstate 15 from his home in Apple Valley.
After spending the last three seasons at the University of Michigan, the quarterback decided his time at Ann Arbor was up. On Dec. 19, Denegal officially transferred to San Diego State, with two years of eligibility remaining.
“I have loved my time at the University of Michigan. I have had an opportunity to develop in one of the most iconic football programs in the nation, and while I am a Wolverine through and through, I have decided to enter the portal,” Denegal posted when making his announcement.
“It is my desire to showcase my talents and skills on the football field on Saturdays. I sincerely thank all of my coaches and professors who have genuinely been there for me throughout my time here.”
Michigan quarterback Jayden Denegal (4) cheers on at warm up before the game between Ohio State and Michigan at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024.
In his three seasons with the Wolverines, Denegal saw limited action on the field. He appeared in one game as a freshman, and six during his sophomore season. In those six appearances behind J.J. McCarthy, a Minnesota Vikings first-round pick, Denegal completed four-of-five passes for 50 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled four times for 10 yards.
The Wolverines captured the National Championship, beating Washington 34-13. Shortly after Jim Harbaugh departed from the program to take the Los Angeles Chargers head coach job.
