MADISON – Luke Fickell has found help for his depleted secondary in the transfer portal and more reinforcements are likely to come.
Geimere Latimer II, a 5-foot-10, 187-pound cornerback, announced his commitment to the Wisconsin football program Tuesday. The Georgia native spent the past two seasons at Jacksonville State and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Latimer is the first commitment Fickell, the Badgers head coach, has received at cornerback from the transfer portal. The position has been hit hard by transfer portal departures.
UW had 11 players at the position last season. Two completed their eligibility. Six left as transfers. Jay Harper and Omillio Agard, two freshmen, have not announced a plan to leave. Two-year starter Ricardo Hallman, a redshirt junior, hasn’t announced his plan for 2025.
In Latimer the Badgers get someone with 27 games of experience. Fourteen of those came as a starter, including 12 of the Gamecocks’ 14 contests this season. He finished this year with 46 tackles, 24 solo, with three interceptions and five passes broken up. He was a second-team all-conference selection in Conference USA.
In the 2023 season he played in all 13 of the team’s games and recorded 10 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble.
The Gamecocks went 18-9 during that time and this year posted a 9-5 record and won Conference USA. Jacksonville State played in the StaffDNA Bowl on Friday. Latimer played in that game and finished with four tackles, three solo.
He announced he was entering the portal after the game, though On3 reported his impending departure on Thursday.
