Today is Dec. 25, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns had their Christmas spoiled by North Carolina in the 1982 Sun Bowl.
In the first-ever Sun Bowl played in the snow, No. 8 Texas ended its 1982 season with a 26-10 loss to an unranked North Carolina team. The Longhorns actually took a 10-3 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tar Heels scored 23 unanswered points in the final frame.
The 1982 Sun Bowl featured only one offensive touchdown, which was UNC running Ethan Horton’s 3-yard touchdown run with 2:17 left in the game. In addition to the two teams combining to kick five field goals, Texas scored on Ronnie Mullins’ recovery of a blocked punt in the end zone and the Tar Heels scored on a fumble recovery.
The 1982 Sun Bowl is the only time that any of UT’s athletic teams has played on Christmas.
