The Texas football team secured its first College Football Playoff win as it defeated Clemson 38-24 at Royal-Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The rugged victory, aided by a season-best rushing attack, sets up a quarterfinal matchup with Arizona State at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Ga., on New Year’s Day.
The quarterfinal between the No. 5 Texas Longhorns (12-2) and the No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils (11-2) will be just the second meeting between the teams. The Longhorns defeated the Sun Devils 52-34 in a 2007 Holiday Bowl clash that featured strong rushing performances by Jamaal Charles and Colt McCoy. Texas ran for 300 yards in the blowout despite being just a slight favorite entering the competition.
The 2024 version of Arizona State features a bruising running back in Cam Skattebo, who’s rushed for 1,568 yards to go with 19 touchdowns. He’s totaled seven 100-yard rushing games, including a 262-yard performance against Mississippi State early in the season. Skattebo is no one-trick pony, however, and is a good receiver out of the backfield. He’s second on the team with 37 receptions for 506 yards and will be leaned on as the Sun Devils will be without leading receiver Jordyn Tyson, who was injured against Arizona.
