Former LSU star Marcus Spears gives blunt recruiting advice to Brian Kelly

A former LSU football defensive lineman sounded off on recruiting at his alma mater over the weekend.

Marcus Spears gave his take on recruiting at his former position and what head coach Brian Kelly’s approach should be to churn out high-level edge rushers.

In a video with college football media personality Adam Breneman, Spears said he talked to Kelly about how the Tigers must change their “philosophy” and target more multi-sport athletes out of high school.

Spears, an All-American defensive end and NFL Draft first-round pick in 2005, played under former LSU head coach Nick Saban. He pointed to fellow first-round defensive linemen Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson as examples of what the Tigers should strive for on the defensive line.

“Nick Saban used to drop me at 290 in coverage because I played basketball,” Spears said.

Though the recruiting landscape has changed due to NIL legislation and the transfer portal, Spears implored Kelly and his staff to pay extra attention to well-rounded prospects.

“I want dudes that play basketball, I want dudes that wrestle,” Spears said. “The ones that were really good and played at a high level, they were not just defensive linemen. They did not have stiff hips; they could drop in coverage.”

Last offseason, Brian Kelly hired high-profile defensive line coach Bo Davis to head up the defensive line. The Tigers saw immediate results with Ahmad Breaux and Dominick McKinley making impacts as true freshman.
