UCF football transfer tracker: Knights add pair of defenders over the holidays

Gus Malzahn’s decision to resign immediately after the season finale kicked off a transfer portal window that opened on Dec. 9, so UCF expected plenty of activity. The Knights ended a 4-8 campaign, their second consecutive losing season in which they missed the postseason for the first time since 2015-16.

SIGNED

LB Keli Lawson

Vitals: 6-6, 220 pounds

Resume: Lawson played at Sherando High School as a three-year starter. He was Virginia’s No. 10 overall player before signing at Virginia Tech as part of its 2021 recruiting class.

Role: He appeared in 25 games over four seasons for the Hokies, totaling 104 tackles with 10 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 9 passes defended.

Outlook: Lawson could step into a starting role for the Knights, who were looking to replace starters Ethan Barr and Deshawn Pace.

S Phillip Dunnam

Vitals: 6-1, 190 pounds

Resume: He played at North Miami Beach Senior High School, where he was a 4-star safety, ranked as the No. 37 safety in the country according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Role: Dunnam appeared in 24 games (7 starts) at Indiana, registering 56 tackles with 3 interceptions. He transferred to FAU in 2024, where he appeared in 11 games, totaling 56 tackles with 3 interceptions and 4 pass breakups.

Outlook: Dunnam is the third safety the Knights have added through the portal, giving the team plenty of depth heading into 2025.

TE Dylan Wade

Vitals: 6-4, 240 pounds

Resume: Wade is returning home to Orlando, where he played at Jones High School before signing with Maryland as part of its 2023 recruiting class.

Role: As a sophomore, Wade finished third on the team in receiving yards (374), receiving touchdowns (2) and fifth in receptions (29) and targets (43). He was used primarily in the tight end and slot receiver spots on offense while also blocking on 116 snaps.
