Some quick thoughts on the first-ever CFP first-round games.
First, they were an embarrassment, with no game remotely competitive. You could have turned the television off at halftime and missed nothing.
Second, the ratings were horrendous. When up against the NFL on Saturday, college football was clobbered by almost 3-1. Who’s the genius who decided to pick these dates and conflict with any NFL game, let alone the world champion Kansas City Chiefs? In total, the four games averaged just above 10 million viewers — making it the fifth-highest ranked game this year, which is not very impressive considering the games themselves are being showcased as opposed to numerous other college football games televised at the same time.

Third, what an overwhelming advantage we saw the home teams get. Talk about home-cooking! One more year of this and we can throw out these meaningless preliminary matches and play them at neutral sites like the quarterfinals are now.

Speaking of meaningless, we are in full-blown bowl season with games on every night. Did you catch that thrilling, record-setting, six-overtime 48-46 Toledo victory over Pitt in the Game Above Sports Bowl? I didn’t. And only about half the seats were filled, judging by the game’s attendance. I know all these bowl games are important to the teams and their players — there’s just too many of them!
