K-State pulls of comeback; defeats Rutgers in Rate Bowl

PHOENIX, Ariz. — After being down 17 points in the second half, Kansas State was able to mount a comeback and defeat Rutgers in the Rate Bowl on Thursday.

Rutgers scored the first touchdown of the game on an Antwan Raymond two yard run to go up 7-3 early in the first quarter. It was the first of three touchdowns for him.

K-State responded on their very next drive, taking the lead on an Avery Johnson two yard touchdown run to open the second quarter.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the first half, K-State tied the game at 17 after Dylan Edwards took a screen 26 yards to the endzone. That was just the start of a big day for the sophomore running back as he also finished with three touchdowns.

The Scarlet Knights took a 27-17 lead into the half. On their opening second half drive, Rutgers built a 34-17 lead thanks to an Athan Kaliakmanis seven yard touchdown pass to Ja’shon Benjamin.

That is when the tide started to turn for K-State. With just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Edwards broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run to narrow Rutgers’ lead to 11.

K-State got the ball back quickly thanks to a Daniel Cobbs interception. They capitalized off the turnover with a four play, 42-yard drive, capped off with a Johnson 13-yard TD pass to Garrett Oakley to make it 34-29. The Wildcats scored 12 points in just over two minutes, completely shifting the momentum.

Rutgers tried to keep the pressure on K-State with an early 4th quarter touchdown from Raymond to go up 41-29, but K-State didn’t waver.

They answered with 14-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a Johnson touchdown pass to Joe Jackson. The Wildcats then forced a Rutgers punt on their next drive, getting the ball back with just under six minutes left in…
